General

What are the dimensions of the hot iron storage shelf?

For an understanding of the hot iron storage shelf dimensions and what irons fit, please refer to this resource

How do I get a replacement cover/pad?

Ironing Board Cover and Pad is a standard feature on all units. Replacement cover and pads can be obtained directly from Iron-A-Way. In fact, you can order online. Otherwise, you can order by phone at 1-800-536-9495, or by completing and returning the re-order form included with each unit.

What is the product warranty?

One-Year Limited Warranty from the date of purchase. Warranty covers all defective parts returned to factory for replacement, other than light bulbs, installed units, finished or stained doors, and ironing board cover and pad. The warranty does not include labor for installation or replacement.

What type of material is the cover and pad?

Both the cover and the pad are heavy duty and industrial grade designed for years of use. The cover is a 50/50 poly/cotton blend manufactured with a silicone finish designed for steam irons. The pad is a 21 oz needle punch material that provides a level of cushioning preferred by our customers over the years. The cover should never be washed in your washing machine. Use only water to remove any residue or build up on the pad. Note: Once you cut the drawstrings and remove the cover and pad from the ironing board, you will no longer be able to re-attach properly. The remaining string will not be long enough to provide the necessary tightening for a proper fit.

Can you ship internationally?

No. We are unable to offer international shipments. All international orders MUST ship to a freight forwarder within the U.S. From there, the customer is responsible for arranging shipment outside the U.S.

Installation

Can all models be recessed?

Yes. All models can be recessed into the wall between standard 2 x 4 studs

Can the ironing center be installed at any height?

One of the benefits of owning an ironing center is you can have it installed at your desired ironing board height. Please refer to the mounting chart in your installation manual to determine appropriate height based on your desired ironing height. As a note, most are installed with a 35-36” ironing height.

Are the ironing centers difficult to install?

The ironing center is very easy to install. Recessed installation only requires:

  • Identifying the desired location
  • Cutting and removing the drywall
  • Adding a cross-support cleat
  • Slipping the unit between the studs and attaching it with the installation screws provided.

Surface mount requires:

  • Identifying desired location,
  • Finding the wall stud,
  • Centering the ironing center on the identified stud and anchoring to stud using provided screws.

Electrical models require a simple hook-up to be made inside the unit.

All units are pre-assembled and ready to install. Check out our installation tips video for further information!

Can the ironing center be recessed into a cabinet rather than a wall?

Yes! The ironing center can be recessed into a cabinet. This is considered a custom installation and requires additional steps that are not mentioned in the installation manual.

Because the back side of the ironing center is narrower than the front, we recommend either using our Surface Mount Trim Kit, or using your own trim to make the sides flush from front to back. This will eliminate the gap of space between the our cabinet and your cabinet wall, allowing a secure installation with provided screws.

The size of the cabinet needs to be built slightly larger the our ironing center cabinet itself, so verify specification sheets carefully on the chosen unit.

Since your cabinet will have the door, you simply purchase your ironing center without a door. However, the door dimension for the model of your choice is very important since it determines the opening size requirement for your cabinet.

For questions on the electrical entrance, please contact us.

Can I make my ironing center flush with a wall or cabinet?

Only the model IAW-42 has the capability to be completely flush inside the wall (when ordered with Blum hinges). All other models can be recessed further than the recommended 3 7/8” so that only 1 ½” remains, provided you have a 2 x 6 wall. However, they are NOT able to fully flush, like the IAW-42. In the case of further recess, you will need to adjust the width of your studs to accept the full 15” width in the stud bay and be sure to finish out the back sides of the unit so that the whole unit is 15” wide, allowing installation screws to fully anchor without a gap of space between stud and the unit. For further information on this custom installation, please call us at 1-800-536-9495.

Do all ironing centers have to be recessed?

All cabinets are designed for either recessed or surface mount. We recommend using our Surface Mount Trim Kit (for the respective model) if the planned installation is surface mount. The IAW-42 does not require the added surface mount trim kit.

Can the ironing center be installed into metal studs?

This type of installation can be completed, but you will need to use mounting screws designed for use with metal studs. Additionally, given the design of metal studs, in your rough-in opening, one stud will need to be trimmed out with a piece of wood to fill the cavity formed in the bend of the metal stud.

Electrical

What is the recommended light bulb?

We recommend a 30R20 with a standard base and 2 1/2″ diameter. This bulb is available at most stores that sell light bulbs.

What are the electrical requirements?

All electrical models are rated at 120V ac, 1500W max, 15 amps.

Can I add an electrical raceway to my non-electric iron center?

Yes. You can add an Iron-A-Way issued electrical raceway to any current non-electric model offered (excludes IAW-42). Please call us at 1-800-536-9495 for pricing and further information, or click here to purchase online. For discontinued models, please call us for information.  Please note: Adding any other electrical parts (other than an Iron-A-Way raceway) to your non-electrical model nullifies your warranty and we are not responsible for any damage it may cause to your ironing center or your home.

Where does the electrical wiring enter the ironing center?

The electrical models contain a raceway that has a knock-out for entry of the house’s electrical wire at the top of the raceway.

Where is the electrical outlet to plug the iron?

If the ironing center has electrical features, the electrical outlet will be at the bottom of the raceway where it is out-of-sight and more conveniently placed when using your ironing center. For models AE-46 and E-46, the outlet will be concealed behind a cord cover. Pull the metal cover from the bottom of the electrical raceway to reveal outlet.

Check our video for better visual.

Are the electrical models hard to wire?

Electrical models are pre-wired for easy installation. All that is required is to connect to the provided pigtails with the incoming electrical wire. Do NOT attempt to remove red electrical caps on wire bundles to connect wires there. Connect ONLY to provided black and white pigtail ends. Connecting anywhere else may cause an electrical short or cause the ironing center to be powered on at all times. The pigtails are located at the bottom of the electrical raceway. All electrical work must be done in accordance with all applicable electrical codes. Electrical models utilize 15 AMPS.

Cabinet

Will it hold all irons?

For information on the hot iron storage shelf size and what irons fit best, please refer to this resource.

Recognizing the importance of hot iron storage to our customers, we have specially designed our ironing centers to accommodate the storage of higher quality premium-sized irons. Presently, all models of ironing centers listed for purchase on this website have the storage capacity to house a large variety of irons currently sold today. However, since we do not manufacture nor design the numerous models of irons sold at retail, we are unable to list all the specific irons that fit into our ironing centers’ hot iron storage area. Additionally, we continue to service ironing center models that were produced throughout our 60-year history. Those models (including our Traditional 42” models) are not always able to provide storage for the ever-changing irons of today’s market. Though irons may appear the same in dimension, many vary in structure and shape, preventing a workable fit in these older models. For these models, we typically recommend smaller household irons.

For current models, we offer a Maytag iron that continues to be tested to fit well.

Is the ironing center frame unfinished?

The front of the face frame is painted a cool grey to match interior, while the sides are unfinished (regardless of door style chosen), ready to be painted or stained. The frame materials is made of solid poplar.

Do most homes stain the cabinet frame to match the door or do they match the cabinet frame to the wall?

This is really a matter of choice but it would be typical that the cabinet frame matches the ironing center door.

What type of wood is the ironing center constructed of?

The cabinet frame is made of poplar, and the back portion that recesses into the wall is made of MDF material, allowing for tight installation in a stud bay. Door material are dependent on which style you select (see door styles on product page for more information). We use poplar for both its ease of use in construction, but also its ability to match color.

Is the hot iron rest different than the hot iron storage?

Yes. While the hot iron storage area provides a safe place to store the iron when finished iron, the Hot Iron Rest feature provides a safe place to rest the iron while turning your garment. The iron is not intended to store on the hot iron rest.

Door

Can I order the ironing center without a door?

Yes! Please select “No Door” when ordering and the unit will arrive without a door allowing you to match custom cabinetry. Hinge hardware, garment bar, and roller catch are included with all “No Door” orders.

Does the door come pre-finished?

The Flat Maple Veneer and Raised Panel Maple doors come unfinished and ready to paint or stain so you can customize your unit to match the room décor. Please note Flat White and Raised Panel White are pre-finished and are not paintable surfaces. Interior of unit has been painted a cool gray saving you hours of unnecessary finishing time. (IAW-42 with Flat White door comes standard with white interior and exterior color.)

What are the door dimensions?

The door dimensions on all 42” ironing board cabinets (excluding the UD-42) are 15” x 52”. The 46” ironing board cabinet and the UD-42 door dimensions are 15” x 60 5/8”.

Are the Flat White and Raised White door styles paintable?

No. Both the Flat White and Raised Panel White doors are pre-finished with melamine and thermafoil coatings, respectively, and are NOT PAINTABLE surfaces

Is the piano hinge, garment bar, and roller catch included with a No Door Unit?

Yes. This is standard with all No Door units.

Adjustable Swivel Feature

Can the board swivel before it is lowered completely into the ironing position?

No. Because the board must come completely out of the cabinet before it can swivel, the board needs to be flat before it can turn left or right. 46″ swivel boards require 51″ clearance from wall to tip of ironing board in order to swivel, and 42″ swivel boards require 47″ clearance. Please refer to the specification sheet on your intended model to verify other specifications.

If we don’t order the swivel now, can we add it at a later date?

Yes. All current models (excluding model IAW-42) of ironing centers presently sold on this site have been designed with the same cabinet depth allowing for conversion from fixed position to swivel ironing board or vice versa. To convert, please call us at 1-800-536-9495.

Can I convert my fixed position ironing board to an adjustable swivel?

Yes. All current models (excluding model IAW-42) can be converted to include our adjustable swivel feature. Models purchased before 2014 may be able to be converted with some configuration changes. Please call us at 1-800-536-9495 for more information and to see if your model can be upgraded.

Can the swivel board turn in both directions?

Yes. When the ironing board is lowered, the swivel allows the board to turn 90 degrees in either direction until the board is parallel with the wall. Additionally, there are conveniently placed stopping points as the board is being turned.
